VILLAGES ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE HISTORIANS

Pursuant to a 1919 state law (Arts and Cultural Affairs Law, Section 57.07), NYS villages and other municipalities are required to appoint a historian, and some of his or her duties also are prescribed by state law (Section 57.09). [Click on the Sections above for a link to the law.]

The Association of Public Historians of New York is a not-for-profit association that represents the approximately 1,600 New York State historians. While membership is voluntary (annual membership fees range from $35 to $55 depending on population), their website lists all municipal historians and contains useful information.  You are encouraged to check that listing for your village and update or complete it.  A number of our villages historians are listed as vacant.  The Association’s website is aphnys.org.
